DROP THE ALPE LAUNCHES

ALPE D'HUEZ is to host the world's first amateur mountain descent road time trial this summer, in an event that guarantees adrenaline and speed in equal measure.

Unlike most mountain time trials, Drop The Alpe sees road cyclists race from the top of Alpe d'Huez, to the bottom, downhill, as quickly as they can. Bucking the trend from the usual uphill races the famous Tour de France climb sees each year, Drop the Alpe promises thrills, excitement, and a chance for the heavier rider to take a KOM on one of the most famous cycling roads in the world.

Event organisers AF Speed Ltd, who will run the event, have said they expect the top speeds on the downhill race to be in excess of 110kph, (65mph), and they recommend all riders wear helmets, and use disc brakes. The 12km descent features 21 famous switchbacks, and an average gradient of minus 8.2%.

They expect the average speeds of the race to be over 65kph and despite the event being run on open roads, with cars, busses and traffic, the event organisers promise a 'safe' and fun environment for all entrants.

Riders will set off in true time trial fashion, 30 seconds apart. The fastest time to reach the bottom will win. The event is open to all riders, kids, families, and all classifications of road and time trial bikes. Entry will cost €50 and includes a free beer which can only be consumed in Alpe d'Huez village before you descend.

The organisers are promising a 'Tour de France' like atmosphere on August 1st when the event takes place. They're encouraging spectators to line the climb in their thousands to make the riders welcome, and also to help act as human safety barriers in the event of a rider going into a corner too fast, to save them from dropping off the side of the famous mountain.
